Recipes have been given by many people, where possible I will say from whom, some I have got from books and others from word of mouth.  I hope that you find something to inspire, inform and help you with using the wonderful variety of Oils available.  Where possible I have tried to keep to pure essential & carrier oils but that is not always possible.

Arthritis - detoxifying bath

2 handful Epsom salts,     1 handful Rock Salt,    Add 4 drops of the following blend;

30 drops Fennel,    16 drops Ginger,    10 drops Juniper

Athlete's Foot

4 drops Tea tree,    3 drops Lavender   in a footbath 2 x a day


Back Ache - 1

4 drop Rosemary,     4 drops Ginger,    2 drops Vetivert,    20 ml Carrier Oil

massage 2 x per day

Back Ache - 2

10 drops Rosemary,    10 drops Marjoram,     10 drops Sage,     30 ml Carrier oil

Bronchitis - Chest rub

5 drops Tea Tree,    5 drops Eucalyptus,    20ml Grape seed Oil.



4 drops Black Pepper,    3 drops Ginger,    10 ml carrier oil


Cracked Heel Balm

3 drops Frankincense,     3 drops Patchouli,    4 drops Lavender,    20 ml Sweet Almond

Apply to affected area at night

Cold/Flu rub

10 drops Lavender,    10 drops Eucalyptus,    5 drops peppermint,    5 drops Frankincense,    30 ml Almond Oil

Cold Sores, Blisters

2 drops Tea Tree.  Apply neat via a cotton bud.  2x per day

Cold Sores

The juice of the Bulbinella plant - this is my favourite plant.....use for cuts, burns, incest bites.  I have always had a plant, even when living in the concrete jungle



4 drops Tea Tree,     6 drops Geranium,     20 ml Carrier Oil

20min 1 x per week......massage into scalp

Dry Skin Mask

2 drops Sandalwood,    1 drop Lavender,  1 drop Chamomile or Neroli,    2 tsp Honey

Dull Hair

4 drops Patchouli,     6 drops Palmarosa,    20 ml Carrier

leave for 20 min on hair 1 x per week.



10 drops Lavender,    10 drops Tea Tree,     5 ml Almond oil


Facial Pamper

2 drops Neroli,    3 drops Petitgrain,    5 drops Orange, 20ml Sweet Almond Oil.  Massage half a tsp gently into the face at night.  (never use citrus oils when going out into the sun.)


Greasy Hair

1 hour mask : 6 drops Cederwood,    4 drops Rosemary,    4 drops Lemon,     30 ml Carrier Oil


Hair Loss

9 drops Rosemary,    9 drops Lavender,    7 drops Juniper,     50 ml Carrier Oil.  Leave in hair for 1 hour.

Hair Thining

3 drops Rosemary,    3 drops Ylang ylang,     1 tsp Vodka.  Leave 2-3 min on hair


Massage neck & chest : 2 drops Chamomile,      1 drop Geranium,     1 drop lemon,    1 tsp Carrier oil


Rub behind ears and forehead : 3 drops Lavender,    3 drops Eucalyptus,    15 ml Carrier Oil

Hot Flush

10 drops Clary Sage,    11 drops Geranuim,     7 drops Lemon,     2 drops Sage,     30 ml carrier Oil


Indigestion : abdominal Pain, bloating, Nausea

2 drops Peppermint,     4 drops Black Pepper,    4 Ginger,     20 ml Grapeseed Oil, over tummy 3x per day


3 drops Lavender,     3 drops Ylang ylang,    2 drops Chamomile,    15 ml Carrier Oil


Low blood Pressure

3 drops Vetiver,     2 drops Lemongrass,    5 drops Rosemary, 20 ml  Carrier Oil.  Full body massage x1 per week.


Massage in lower back : 3 drops Peppermint,    5 drops Rosemary,    2 drops Chamomile,    1 dessertspoon Carrier Oil

Lymphatic congestion

4 drops Fennel,    2 drops Juniper,    4 drops Cypress,     20 ml Grapeseed,     Massage 1 tsp full into lower legs & feet 2x per week.


Menopause Massage

5 drops Sage,     5 drops Cypress,    5 drops Geranium,    5 tsp Carrier Oil

Menopause Morning Bath Blend

10 drops Geranium,    5 drops Chamomile,    5 drops Grapefruit,    10 ml Soya Oil

Menopause Sweats

Morning Sickness

1 drop Ginger     or    1 drop peppermint....sniff on tissue

Muscle Remedy

Nail Infection

10 drops Tea Tree,    5 drop Eucalyptus,    5 drops Patchouli,    10 drops Tagettes,    30 drops carrier Oil

Nail Strengthner

10 drops Grapeseed,    5 drops Jojoba,    3 drops carrot seed oil,    8 drops Lemon,    3 drops Rosemary.  Massage into nails



3 drops Juniper,     4 drops Lemon,    3 drops Fennel,    20 ml Carrier Oil.  Massage afflicted areas in upward strokes - towards the heart.


4 drops Black Pepper,    4 drops Lavender,    2 drops Vetiver,     2o ml carrier oil. 2x per day

Osteoarthritis 2

10 drops Ginger,     5 drops Basil,     10 drops Marjoram,     30 ml carrier oil


Period Pains

5 drops Marjoram,    3 drops Ginger,    2 Vetiver,    20 ml Grapeseed oil.  Massage over abdomen followed by hot water bottle 3 x per day.


3 drops Lavender,     3 drops Palmarosa,    in evening bath.

Rheumatoid Arthritis 1

5 drops frankincense,    3 drops Eucalyptus,    15 drops Rosemary,    50 ml carrier Oil.

Shaving Oil for Men

4 drops Patchouli,    6 drops Frankincense,    20 ml Apricot Kernal / Grapseed.    1/2 tsp on face 1 x per day

Sleep Aid

3 drops Lavender,    2 drops Ylang ylang,    2 drops Sandalwood,    20 ml carrier oil

Stress 1

9 drops Bergamot,    11 drops Geranium,     10 drops Ginger,    30 ml carrier Oil

Stress 2

Tennis Elbow

10 drops Eucalyptus / Peppermint, 10 Ginger, 10 Rosemary.  30 ml Carrier


Water Retention / bloating

5 drops Fennel,  5 drops Juniper,  15 drops Lemon,  5 drops Peppermint.  30 ml Carrier


 Creams :

Athlete's Foot Lotion

20 drops Lavender,    10 drops Tea Tree,    10 drops Myrrh, 30 ml Aqueous cream


Basic Hand Cream

12 g Cocoa butter,     30 ml Almond Oil,     12 g Beeswax,    5 ml Evening Primrose,     5 ml Carrot Oil.



2 drops Rose,    8 drops Chamomile,     20 ml Carrier.

First Aid Cream

5 drops Lavender,    5 drops Tea Tree,    20g base cream

Foot Care Cream

4 drops Peppermint,    6 drops Black Pepper, 20g base cream

Oily Skin

Toning & soothing.  6 drops Lavender,    4 drops Lemon,    20 ml base lotion

Shaving blend for face & legs

5 drops Sandalwood,    5 drops Patchouli,     20 ml bas lotion


4 drops Chamomile,    6 drops Lavender,    20 ml base lotion.  Apply as needed

Super Hand Cream

3 drops Neroli,    7 drops Geranium,     20 ml base cream


Whipped Shea Butter  ( heat slowly or the shea will crystalise on hardening)

Melt 500g shea, do not let it boil, heat until very soft and nearly fully melted. Remove from heat, Add 15 to 30ml of jojoba or grapeseed oil. Using a stick blender (do not use a stand up blender),  begin blending on high, this will be done off and on for at least 15 to 20 minutes, blend 3 to 4 minutes, turn off blender, wait 2 minutes and begin again. When your butter begins to thicken  near the end you will add your fragrance oil or essential oils. Add up to 2 tablespoons fragrance or 1 teaspoon essential and blend this in well. 
Once your butter is like firm whipped cream you will take this and refrigerate it until completely cool. Package and store closed in a cool dry place.

Whipped Body Butters

Body butters can be made from many types of butters, shea butter, cocoa butter, avocado butter to name a few. You can also use different kinds of liquid oils also, from Olive Oil, Almond Oil, Avocado Oil,

1 and 1/3 Cups of Shea Butter / Cocoa Butter / Avocado Butter

˝ Cup of Olive Oil /Almond Oil / Avocado Oil / Grapeseed Oil

1 tsp. Of Vitamin E Oil

15 ml of essential oil

You will want to heat the Shea Butter up slowly in a medium sized sauce pan until the Shea is in liquid form add in the olive oil once you achive liquid form of Shea Butter. Let the mixture then sit and cool for about 30 to 40 minutes. Do not let it set fully back up though. At this point you are going to add in the Vitamin E and the Fragrance Oil.

You will now want to use a stick blender to whip the mixture until its very light in texture. It will give off a "mousse" like consistency. Make sure you have blended your fragrance oil and vitamin E oil in well. When selecting your fragrance oil choose something you will like as this whipped body butter will be an all over body delight.

When you have reached the desired consistency you can spoon your finished product into some kind of container. I have used everything from glass jars to glad containers. You can use any type of container as long as it has some sort of lid you will not want to expose this to air for long periods of time. Do not over pack the whipped body butter or you will defeat the purpose of it being whipped and light.

No-Rinse Green Clean - for fridges

Cuts grease, disinfects and leaves a clean, natural scent—without harsh chemicals.

1 cup white distilled vinegar
2 cups hot water
5 to 10 drops lavender essential oil

Mix all ingredients together and stir or shake thoroughly.  Wipe out fridge when cleaning.




Massage :

Cellulite / lymph drainage blend

20 ml Sesame oil        5 drops Fennel        5 drops Juniper berry        5 drop Grapefruit        5 drop Lemon

Blend in a small bowl, brush body upwards with a natural bristle body brush, rub in the oil from toe to head (always in the direction towards the heart), wait 10 min, shower.

Cate Erland, Mountain Massage






Soaps :

Cold Pressed Soap.

170 g Olive Oil,    400 g Coconut Oil,    100 g Avocado Oil,    280 Soya Oil,    350 Palm Kernel Oil,     60 g Shea Butter,    192 Sodium Hydrozide

498 g Water.

Blend together at 38-45 deg C.    Add 30ml essential oil of choice.

Makes a nice solid bar, with excellent lather and moisturising qualities.  If no colourant used, makes a pale earthy yellow bar (due to Palm Kernel Oil) Exfoliants like 2-3 tbs orange / lemon peel, or finely ground (used) vanilla pods may be added.
